What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. According to DSM-5 criteria, it is characterised as “a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development”. People with ADHD often experience difficulties with concentration and distractibility and this can lead to problems organising and completing tasks. ADHD can also include high energy, excessive physical movement, and impulsivity.

It is possible to have the attention and concentration difficulties without hyperactivity, and this is referred to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Screening appointment

The Cooley Practice offers a triage assessment to determine whether a full diagnostic assessment of ADHD is warranted.

The triage assessment involves completion of screening questionnaires, alongside a follow-up telephone call with a clinical psychologist. This will provide an opportunity for discussion around the reason for referral and your current strengths and needs. Together, you will also review the outcome of the screening questionnaires and by the end of the call, a decision can be made about whether a full ADHD assessment is required.

Full diagnostic assessment

Following the screening appointment, our full diagnostic assessment uses a combination of standardised assessment measures and clinical interviews to gather information relevant to your assessment. Information will be collected from you and someone who knows you well (e.g., a family member).

Where indicated, the clinical psychologist may choose to use the Qb check. The result of this computer test provides objective data for the clinician to consider alongside other information gathered.

The clinical psychologist leading your assessment will then review all of the information that has been gathered to confirm the outcome of the assessment, which they will share with your during a feedback appointment. A comprehensive diagnostic report, including recommendations, will follow.
